Black Raven Pipe Band

With all my recent news on Thomas Ashe, i forgot to remind listeners that Ashe was a founding member of The Black Raven Pipe Band, who are a world renowned pipe band based in Rush/Lusk area of Fingal. Ashe is reputed to have obtained the first set of pipes and taught himself to play.

All this information and much more is available on the Pipe Band website www.blackravenpipaband.net

My thanks to Damien Russell and all at the band for their good wishes and praise of my song The Ballad Of Thomas Ashe [track 9], from my album My Ireland.

61 days

jeannie johnston ship

I recently saw some images of the Famine people similar to those who would have sailed in the great ships of the time, and giving me the idea  and the inspiration to write the song 61 DAYS.

If you ever get the chance to visit the bronze statues on the quays in Dublin beside the famine ship The Jeannie Johnston, you should do so , they are very emotive.

Let Me Carry Your Cross

Let me carry your cross for Ireland Lord

The hour of her trial draws near

and the pangs and the pain of her sacrifice

may be borne by comrades dear

But Lord take me from the offering throng

There are many far less prepared

though anxious and all as they are to die

that Ireland might be spared

Let me carry your cross for Ireland Lord

my cares in this world are few

and few are the tears that will for me fall

when i go on my way to you

for the empty homes of our golden plains

for the hopes of our children too

Let me carry your cross for Ireland Lord

for the cause of Roisin Dubh

Thomas Ashe

With Easter fast approaching, our thoughts turn to that very special time in our history , when our country took the first steps on the road to becoming the nation that we are today. At the forefront of of that great struggle was our very own Thomas Ashe. Ashe was born in Kerry but came to the little village of Lusk as a teacher in the local Hedgestown national school. Thomas Ashe was to play a key role in the insurrection in 1916, and indeed he made a huge mark on the culture and heritage of his adopted Fingal, in the way of sport and music also.

And so it was that i came to write the beautifull BALLAD OF THOMAS ASHE , featuring an excerp from his poem Let Me Carry Your Cross For Ireland. You can find this lovely ballad on my new CD –MY IRELAND. When you log on to my site you can get a short snippet of all the songs on my home page. As the weeks pass and we get closer to Easter i will bring you some more information on this great Irishman.

Fingal Folk Club

The word on the street is that a new Folk Club is to be opened shortly under the heading of Fingal Folk Club.

What a great idea. Plans are already at an advanced stage with a website under construction. The new venue–yet to be announced- will showcase all the best in local talent, from singer songwriters to story tellers, traditional music and all things in between. When ever i have some more news i will post it , and i should have a link to the site when it is complete–watch this space.
